I believe what he is stating that you'll get what you want when you follow the rules. For example, if a little boy wants a toy car for christmas his parents tell him he has to be nice year-round in order for Santa to get him his desired gift instead of coal. Another example would be when a student recieves an award or gets taken out for ice cream for having good grades. I believe animals can feel some freedom when an owner gives them playtime for not spoiling the living room or kitchen.
